I aim to write my newsletter issues in a way one can follow them while traveling on a bus, having a coffee, waiting for food, etc. Let's jump in!

How do these 5 gadgets work?

Here are some gadgets and algorithms I came across over the course of Season 1 while exploring different products to see if there was any existing similar content online. I found really concise videos of a couple. So, I’m sharing them with you including a brief of what you’ll find and learn in the videos.

  1. How Electric toothbrush work? (1-minute video)

An electric motor converts the rotary motion into an oscillatory motion of the brush head. So basically, the brush head rotates a couple of degrees back and forth at high speeds using this mechanism. You’ll find an animation of the same in the first YouTube video without any voice-over. It’s self-explanatory.

  2. How do Anti-snoring devices work? (2-minute video from timestamp 3.30)

As the name implies, these are devices used to stop you from snoring while you’re asleep. When you’re sleeping, your throat, tongue, and jaw all relax. This can narrow your throat’s airway and all the soft tissue around your throat vibrates when you breathe in causing that snoring sound. Jump to 3:30 and it’s only a 2-minute video where he explains how it works.

  3. How does Touch Screen work? (10-minute video)

This is a visually pleasing animation from Bright Side that explains the history, different types of touch screens available currently, and how they work. Example - Resistive & Capacitive touch screens and their classifications.

  4. How does Shazam work? (10-minute video)

I used to use this App extensively when I first heard about it, to find songs I don’t know about that are being played at the place I’m at. The App can simply listen to the song that’s being played and tell you the song exactly with almost 100% accuracy I guess. It uses Spectrogram and clever use of Hash functions. The video explains the algorithm in detail with examples.

  5. How do QR codes work? (6-minute video)

The video goes over the history of QR codes, and the difference between a bar code and a QR code before jumping into what’s actually in it. We’re seeing QR codes everywhere these days & the video distills the different sections in a QR code and what they mean.

Gadget of the week

Fashion: The All-Dai Shoe made from sustainable materials can be worn in four different ways. It is convertible as a sneaker, sandal, mule, or open-toe sneaker. The middle portion of your foot always remains covered by the shoes basically. Whereas, the toes and heels can be closed like a shoe or can be collapsed individually without affecting the other. Thus, creating 4 combinations (2*2) for wearing the footwear.
